Hong Kong International Airport
Opened in February 2007, the construction of Hong Kong International Airport at
Chek Lap Kok was completed at a cost of more than $20bn.
Features
The airport has a site size of 12.48km² and has 288 check-in counters, 200 immigration desks, 80 customs positions, 2.5km of moving walkways and around 120 shops.
It also consists of Sky Plaza – an office, retail and business complex integrated with the passenger terminal (terminal two), which then links to the rest of Sky City.
Challenges
There were no sufficient amount of flat land available in the territory of Hong Kong; hence a 1,250 hectares island had to be created from scratch.
Road and rail connections, including a number of bridges were also built to connect the airport to Kowloon and Hong Kong island, located about 34 km to the southwest. It is really a masterpiece.
